Is there a chance to be freed?

Basically yes. The so-called load limit is intended to ensure that a patient with statutory health insurance does not have to bear any excessive financial burdens due to his illness.

This load limit applies per calendar year. The gross household income of the adult patient is relevant for the calculation of this limit. The total own expenses may not exceed 2 percent of the gross household income. In order to determine the financial expenditure, all personal contributions made for medicines, medical aids and remedies, physiotherapy, co-payments for stays in hospital, costs for home care and also for sick trips incurred in the corresponding calendar year are taken into account.

If the patient is chronically ill, the limit is even just 1 percent of gross household income. The lower load limits also apply to patients who receive unemployment benefit II.
